Thus
says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty
man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him
who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord
who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in
these things I delight, declares the Lord.”
Behold,
the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will punish all those who are
circumcised merely in the flesh— Egypt, Judah, Edom, the sons of Ammon, Moab,
and all who dwell in the desert who cut the corners of their hair, for all
these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised
in heart.”
Chapter 8 and chapter 9 end and begin
respectively with the prophet Jeremiah grieving for Judah for they have
hardened their hearts against God and continue to serve other gods even though
they are being warned against those actions. Jeremiah reminds us of our Lord
for He cared for us to die for us. Reading this book we are reminded ourselves
of how fickle we can be and soon forget who is our provider and Saviour. Modern
day Baals are different but idols nonetheless.
Our Father hates to be
replaced in our lives. Holy Spirit we pray lead and direct us in all we do that
we may not fall into the trap of idolatry and disobedience.
At the end of chapter 9 the
Lord reminds us who He is and what He is like. Our God is steadfast in love;
justice and righteousness.
