This
is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is
light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with
Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk
in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and
the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we
have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess
our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from
all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and
His word is not in us
This epistle
was written to correct false doctrine that denied Christ’s deity and humanity.
This led to people not taking sin seriously.
We are
urged to walk in the light and in truth; in fellowship with the one who is from
the beginning and to walk in fellowship and love with one another.
We
cannot walk in Love with one if we do not walk in the Light.
That
which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our
eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the
Word of life— the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and
declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested
to us— that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may
have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with
His Son Jesus Christ. And these things we write to you that your joy may be
full.
It is
important that we remind ourselves what beginning is John talking about..
In
the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
In
the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.
All
things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.
In
Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
There
was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
This
man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him
might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that
Light.
That
was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.
He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.
He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.
He
came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.
But
as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God,
to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will
of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
